Deputy Inspector General of Police East Aleem Jaffary said that measures relating to law and order in Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) will be strengthened further in collaboration with Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) and assistance will also be provided to CPLC neighbourhood care projects.
This was stated by DIG Aleem who called on KATI Chairman Mohammad Zubair Chhaya and other officer bearers on Wednesday. During the meeting he had given the industrialists full assurance regarding addressing issues pertaining to minor and major law and order situation in the city. “Industrial wheel must keep rolling as it provides jobs to numerous people and generates revenue for the national exchequer. This community should be provided security on priority basis,” Jaffary said. He informed that considering the current situation of the metropolitan, Karachi police were facing acute shortage of additional force due to the deployment of personnel at various places, particularly for the protection of polio workers, voters’ list verification teams and VIP personalities.
He, however, said he would look into the issues raised by the KATI, and would ensure deployment of police personnel for the CPLC-NC projects initiated in different sectors of KIA. He advised the industrialists to install cameras in their factories and to maintain record of the activity taking place inside their premises. He further said that camera vigilance had become an integral part of security measures all over the world.
Meanwhile, the KATI chairman pointed out that KATI had initiated CPLC-NC projects in various sectors of KIA in order to strengthen security and vigilance, but most of them had yet to become functional due to absence of police force. He said that without participation of police, CPLC-NC projects could not be successful and the DIG should provide them with security as per commitment. He further said that some adjoining areas of KIA were the major hideouts of criminals and should be cleansed altogether from the extortion mafia and other criminals’. He also said that the Awami Colony Police Station was the most neglected as police did not maintain vigilance of that area. He said that criminals were using the influence of various political parties and were operating from areas considered to be strongholds of different parties.
All Karachi Industrial Alliance President Mian Zahid Hussain said on the occasion that most of the extortionists were misusing the names of political parties, and if those parties showed some political will, crimes would be completely eliminated from the entire area. He said that KIA was partially better than other industrial zones in terms of security due to the fact that industrial representatives had direct contacts with different political parties and law enforcing agencies, whom were frequently informed about the situation of KIA.
Law and Order Committee Chairman Nadeem Khan suggested to the DIG to speed up patrolling activities in Mehran and Bilal Town, while urging him to carry out an operation in those areas to control the rising crime rate. He further demanded the provision of police force for KIA. Later, other participant of the meeting, including Masood Naqi, Gulzar Firoz, Akbar Farooqui, SM Farhad and Niaz Ahmed, also briefed the DIG about the crime situation in KIA.
