Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Chaudhry on Wednesday said that it was the duty of the judges to uphold the law and the constitution and they shall do so at all costs.
In a statement , the CJ whislt critising the federal ministers for giving unsubstantiated opinions added that the case against Prime Minister (PM) Raja Pervaiz Ashraf would be heard even if the “sky were to fall down”. The CJ said that PPP workers were beating drums outside the Supreme Court to force it into not hearing the Rental Power Plants case
Earlier on Tuesday, the SC had ordered arrest of PM Ashraf . The orders were given while Dr Tahirul Qadri’s long march was underway in Islamabad. The ruling caused uproar in the country and speculations of an ‘imminent coup’ resulted in a 500 point crash of the The Karachi Stock market 100-index. Aitzaz Ahsan commenting on the developments, said that the PM can perform his duties as the chief executive of the country even from the confines of a prison cell. Some legal experts maintain that the deadline for arrest of the prime minister, along with 16 other respondents in the case, ends today.
