7 dead, 800 affected in Balochistan measles epidemic

The number of children affected by measles in Balochistan has reached 800 and at least seven children have died because of the disease. Balochistan EPI Provincial Manager Dr Muhammad Anwar claimed that out of the seven dead children, three children belonged to Pishin, two hailed from Naseerabad, one each from Sibbi and Karkahn. Dr Anwar further said that the eradication of measles campaign had been launched in 23 district of province and 1.9 million children had been vaccinated during this campaign. He also claimed measles vaccination campaign would be launched in Bolan, Sibbi, Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad and Naseerabad, including the district area of Sindh, and a plan had been chalked out in this regard. He further claimed that there was a shortage of measles vaccine and a letter had been written to the government in this regard. He added that the government had assured timely provision of the vaccine. Meanwhile, Balochistan chief minister took notice of the measles epidemic in the province and gave direction to the Health Department to send teams to the affected areas.
