Police can close banks over security lapses: Following a series of bank robberies in the city, top police officers have authorised the area police to close those bank branches which are ignoring the security requirements such as burglary alarm system, sniper point, closed circuit TV system and a round-the-clock security watch. The area police have been advised to ensure the implementation of Punjab Shops and Security Ordinance and, as a matter of deterrence, security guards and police contingents in the commercial markets are posted while the station house officers (SHOs) have been directed to erect barriers at critical points to check offenders.
These strict orders have been issued after three banks were looted within three weeks in the city and the police held the bank managers concerned responsible for not adopting security parameters. Three days ago, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Usman Anwar laid down a special strategy by assigning the security responsibility of the banks to the respective police officers who will be held responsible for any event of robbery.
These cases of bank robberies hint at the vulnerable security situation in the city which is marred by an increasing number of street crimes over the recent months.
The police officers have been directed to visit the banks and take action against the bank managers if they fail to implement the security parameters in their respective branches.
The heads of the branches have been warned that if a closed-circuit television system is not working in their branch, they will be held responsible for the breach of security. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also directed Regional Police Officer (RPO) Aftab Ahmed Cheema to take all measures to control crime in the division.
