Federal Law Minister Farooq Naik on Friday said that the right to appeal should be given in public interest litigation cases to a strike balance.
Addressing a seminar titled Public Interest Litigation organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), he said that litigation was a weapon which must be used with care so that the judiciary could not encroach upon the government’s authority.
“Courts should exercise self-restraint,” he added.
He said that many public interest cases were being filed without any reason and it was essential to introduce some guidelines for the procedure. He stressed that if such guidelines were not set, traditional cases would suffer.
He said that the PPP government was committed to the welfare of lawyers, adding that the government had already released Rs 420 million for construction of SCBA lawyers’ hostel. He also announced Rs 10 million in grant for the SCBA.
