ISLAMABAD – Pakistan can generate over 350,000 MW electricity through only wind energy against the country’s total demand of about 21,000 MW peak summer, necessitating solid steps to explore the potential. Official sources in Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) told APP that the country’s has numerous resources to get energy and over 50,000 MW energy could be generated only in Gharo-Keti Bandar corridor where average wind speed is more than seven meter per second.
They said the corridor has potential twice of India and other sites in Balochistan, Punjab, and northern area, which are being identified for power generation. The sources said Pakistan has amongst the world highest and fastest rising urbanisation and electricity is available to only 57 percent of the population while natural gas to 21 percent.
Only 45 percent of rural population has access to grid electricity and there is extreme shortage of electricity and gas leading to load-shedding. The country’s economic growth is also suffering due to load-shedding of gas and power, leading to closures of industries, they added. They said the total installed and dependable capacity of the country’s power sector is 20,231 MW.
Giving breakup, they said 11,735 MW could be get from public sector while 8,496 MW from private sector. “By switching to alternative energy means, Pakistan can reduce dependence on imported oil, running into billions dollars and undermining economic development,” they observed.

  1. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

If pakistan has such potential (better than India) than why nothing has been done so far? Shortage didn't come over night. It has been created because no body has interest or vision. Just like in India, every one is interested in their own things.

I am making this comment because I care people who are victim of system and not where they are born and color. If Pakistan wish to start assiting people with distributed power it will be much faster and easier. No need for transmission lines, no transmission loses and don't need milliona nd billions. Our company is in designing and manufacturing small vertical axis wind turbines for small to medium application and are willing to work with any one serious and interested.

    'HAPPY RAMADAN' to all.

    • Thanks for your good suggestion, I would like to add some feed back to your information hope you will consider it carefully I can see your dedication, When you look at the map of Pakistan its population density, purchasing power and above all Wind Resources of the country, actually the Pakistani media is boosting only one windy site out of three if you see the map of wind resources of Pakistan, it is because most of the land is barren and owned by Government of Pakistan so they are looking for investors to lease the land so Govt. can get revenue and electricity at the same time with no cost paid by Government. That's why the wind data and feasibility reports are made available only for this one site.
What you are suggesting is small and medium VAWTs turbines for distributed power will help only a small fraction of that proposed site yes they can use products like yours. The places where most of the population lives have electricity access but facing shortfalls in service and most of populated area don't have much good resources, It is about the Sind Provence of which you read in the article, fist point. The second is the remaining other two windy site one is situated in a place where there is no grid and almost no one lives in, that is Baluchistan Provence I can say it is out of site. The third one is populated and is good place for your products but you will wait for some time because they are not aware of wind power this is the former North West Frontier Provence, most of its area is in the circle of so called War against terror, the Provence has a vast potential of Hydro power generation, major dams of the country are here so the Government does't considering the Wind. by the way I should rather mention it earlier that Pakistan is Federal state and all the Provinces has their own Governments and Policies some wards like Germany.

You are welcome to contact me for any further info on the topic related to Wind Power Development in my country, by the way I am Nizar a student of Wind Power at Gotland University Sweden

  2. When Arif Alauddin rules AEDB, who is not only closed relative to Altaf Hessian but also enjoying his full support for last two decades, then good-luck to the renewable-energy sector. Now, Subprime country Pakistan and Pak Army should take notice of criminal negligence of AEDB and his CEO and must take steps to create enabling environment and level playing field so that ordinary investors can play their role without any fear.
I am very satisfied with Pakistan Today, a new paper but taking seriously wind energy sector and generating healthy debate.

  3. Arif Alauddin posted as CEO AEDB by the blessing of MQM chief Mr. Altaf Hussain. During last three and half years he was failed to add single megawatt on the national grid, except making presentation in five-star hotels. How one can believe on this statement?
All dreams are for poor Pakistanis.
