The consumption of poultry items in the twin cities increased considerably following the drop in temperature leading to an unprecedented hike in the prices of eggs and chicken. The current retail price of a dozen eggs is Rs 130 compared to Rs 60 to 65 in the summer. Likewise, a kilogramme of chicken now costs Rs 200 while its price fluctuated between Rs 110 and 120 a few weeks ago. Many customers have asked authorities to take stern action against retailers who are overcharging. “Negligence on the part of authorities encourages traders and retailers to charge customers at will,” said Qureshi, a customer. “The recent increase in prices of eggs and chicken is attributed to the increase in their demand because of the weather,” said Fahad, a shopkeeper. Citizens have requested authorities to fix prices and ensure proper monitoring.
