Speakers at a workshop on Monday stressed the need for making legislation for the welfare of senior citizens.
The one-day provincial consultation workshop for senior citizens entitled Bill and Policy 2012 was organized by HelpAge International in collaboration with Jhaag Welfare Association, a non-governmental organisation.
Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab Zakia Shahnawaz speaking on the occasion said that a bill would be brought in the Punjab Assembly for the welfare of senior persons so that they could lead their lives in a respectable manner.
She said that senior citizens were not a burden. On the contrary, she said, they were boon for society, adding that they should be provided with maximum facilities as per their requirements.
She said that standardised old homes should be established in the province with all state-of-the-art facilities.
She also stressed on the implementation of laws made for the welfare of people, especially senior citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, Social Welfare Director General Muhammad Aslam suggested that an international convention should be signed for the rights of senior persons like the convention for child protection rights.
