The Supreme Court on Monday took notice of the alleged illegal appointment of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s son-in-law in the World Bank. A three-member SC bench headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali would conduct hearing in the case on December 19.

The suo motu was taken over news reports that Raja Azeem had been appointed as the executive director in the international monetary organisation.

Sources said Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh had expressed reservations over the decision but the prime minister had put his foot down over the issue and ordered appointment of his son-in-law to the lucrative position.

Transparency International-Pakistan (TIP) had on Sunday drew the attention of Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf towards allegations of nepotism in rapid promotion of his son-of-law in Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOIB), his appointment in the PM’s Secretariat and his current posting as the WB executive director.

It said until a few years back, the PM’s son-in-law was serving in grade-18 in the Income Tax Group, but he was first hired by the EOBI in BPS-20 and soon after his father-in-law’s elevation as PM, he too was elevated in the PM Secretariat to a grade-21 post.

The TIP said the post of World Bank ED was highly lucrative, offering $220,000 per annum along with other perks and privileges.

The news report regarding the appointment said the Finance Division believed Azeem’s appointment might create an embarrassing situation for the country because the ED represented several countries like Iran, Algeria, Afghanistan and others, and they might raise objection when Pakistan’s designated son-in-law assumes charge as full fledged ED.

    • CJ has nothing to do with Raja rental. Supreme court disqualified Yousaf Raza and PPP chief appointed Raja as PM.

  1. CJ is Man on a mission. Before he leaves in twelve months he would have left a goilden mark on Pakistan's history and his Courage in dealing with these Besharram Politicians. CJ ZB

  2. I believe that the judiciary in Pakistan is part of a conspiracy to waste our time. In the past four years, the judiciary has not been able to reduce the number of pending cases in the courtrooms and they have not been able to decide on any judicial case that would be beneficial to the people of Pakistan. But the judiciary claims that it has not been able to perform because the bureaucracy of Pakistan does not perform its duty. The judiciary is not interested in helping the people of Pakistan. Their latest ruling for construction of the Kalabagh Dam is another example of how the judiciary wastes the time of the people of Pakistan. Pakistan is a country that has the potential for 55,000 MW production of electricity from water flow. There is essentially a series of steps giving Pakistan the potential to generate electricity from the same water repeatedly. Pakistan has already wasted several years in the discussion of the Kalabagh Dam. Finally, after 2010 the country has started work on a number of hydro-power plants, out of which five hydro dams of a total 436 MW power production have already started production in 2012, while another 5,000 MW will start production in the next 8-10 years. There are a number of bigger projects that can produce more than 4,000 MW per location, such as the Basha and Dasu Dam in Kohistan location. These will actually help increase the life and production of Warsak and Tarbela Dam as these two dams would stop most of sedimentation from seeping into the lower dams.

  3. I agree with Nadeem, Judiciary in Pakistan have wasted thousands of hours and resources on non-issues (like; memo gate) while it's sleeping on the real issues related to people of Pakistan. They only work on cases where cheap popularity can be gained.
