Nick Compton was happy to play the supporting role as opening partner Alastair Cook made a record 23rd Test hundred for England. The Somerset batsman’s maiden Test half-century was overshadowed by his captain’s history-making 136 not out, which also saw the 27-year-old become the youngest player to reach 7,000 Test runs. But Compton’s 57 in an opening stand of 165 was a valuable contribution and he was pleased with his efforts.
