IGP orders strict security for D-8 summit, Muharram

Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bani Amin Khan has directed officials concerned to ensure comprehensive security arrangements for the ongoing D-8 summit being hosted by Pakistan and for the processions and religious gatherings during the month of Muharramul Haraam.
The IGP directed all sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) and station house officers (SHOs) to ensure effective security at important Muharram procession routes and enhance vigilance at all entrance points of the city.
These directions were given by him in a meeting attended by DIG (Security) Ahmed Mukarram, DIG (Headquarters) Sultan Azam Temuri, AIG (Operations) Tahir Alam Kham, SSP Islamabad Yaseen Farooq, SSP (Traffic) Dr. Moeen Masood, SSP (Security) Mir Vais Niaz, SPs, SDPOs and other police officials.
The IGP directed SSP (Traffic) to implement a proper traffic plan for the convenience of road users and to ensure that special arrangements were put in place to divert the flow of traffic towards alternative routes. The IGP also said that officials concerned should ensure that parking facilities should be kept at a safe distance from the Muharram procession routes.
The IGP further directed the security officials to depute vigilant police personnel at important points including pickets established in the Red Zone. He also asked the police officers to brief their subordinates from time to time regarding the implementation of efficient security protocols. He also directed police officers to handover anti-riot kits to recruits during performance of various assignments and said that sluggish attitude in performance of duties would not be tolerated.
As part of the security plan for Muharramul Haraam, the IGP said that strict checking of participants of religious gathering and processions would be ensured thorough, while metal detectors would also be used for the purpose. Strict vigilance should be maintained by the police and the peace committees to ensure that no untoward incident took place, the IGP concluded.
