The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday issued notices to all the relevant parties during the hearing of a suo motu case pertaining to corruption in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The apex court sought a comprehensive report regarding the PIA, asking whether there were chances of national airliner standing back on its feet.
A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case.
The chief justice said the nation be informed whether there were any chances of PIA’s restoration. He said the national institutions were being destroyed and there was nobody to inquire about the rampant corruption.
PIA’s lawyer Raja Bashir told the court that the affairs in the national airliners were not smooth and the flights were being delayed.
The chief justice said the PIA was also facing allegations over the purchase of new aircraft.
He said that the PIA chairman be summoned to inform the court as to what measures were being taken,
The judge also referred to former defence minister Ahmad Mukhtar’s interview to a private Tv channel in which he conceded that deficit was Rs 42.2 billion when he took charge which later rose to Rs 111.5 billion.
Until and unless a system is evolved where corrupt are punished with in a week after the disclosure of charges, things shall never improve.Once the case goes in the court it takes years to decide. The issues which have documentary evidence against misuse of authority to benefit certain people that should be enough to punish an individual.Justice delayed justice denied
Like all public sector corporations, PIA also requires reengineering of its operations. We must not sell off our national assets to please or reward our buddies. Its the Chief Executive of a corporation who makes or breaks an organization. So, bring in real competent, honest, and progressive chief executives in public sector organizations with fixed tenure of office, authority and security of life and property to turn around his organization and start making progress and profits.
