US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olsan Wednesday said the US would continue its policy of close relationship with Pakistan.
He said his country wants strong relations with Pakistan on the basis of mutual respect and interests.
Speaking to reporters at a function at the US Embassy in Islamabad Wednesday organized to witness the US Presidential Election results, Olsan said Pakistan is a very important country where we have strong interests. He said both the countries have many shared interests and better relations are in the interest of both the countries.
Admitting ups and downs in bilateral relations, he said the US recognizes the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the war against terror. He said Pakistan and US are friends and we are looking forward for constructive cooperation between the two countries in the war on terror.
To a question about the elections in Pakistan, the ambassador said it is clearly an internal matter of Pakistan. We, however, welcome the fact that there will be elections in the country and we look for a transition from a democratically elected government to another democratically elected government. It is an important milestone in Pakistan’s history.
To another question, Richard Olsan said Pakistan has an important role to find solutions of the problems in Afghanistan. He said Pakistan is already playing constructive role in this regard and we appreciate its efforts.
He described the tight and closed race for the white house as a triumph of democracy.
