Lawyers across the country on Saturday observed “black day” to condemn the imposition of emergency and promulgation of Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) on November 3, 2007 by then president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf.
Lawyers boycotted all court proceedings in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshwar, Quetta, Sukkur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Mianwali, Multan, Gujranwala and several other cities.
Bar councils and associations held protest meetings while black flags were hoisted on various bar buildings.
During the period of emergency, the constitution was suspended until December 15.
Former president Musharraf was also the army chief at the time.
The chief justice of Pakistan had declared the emergency null and void through an interim verdict and directed the army not to implement any illegal order of then president.
But soon after the interim verdict, the chief justice and several other judges were suspended and kept under house arrest on Musharraf’s order.
However, after taking oath as president for a second-term, Musharraf announced to end the emergency on December 16.
