ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani and his corps commanders on Wednesday took up several important issues during the 136th Corps Commanders’ Conference, including the recent Munich Conference that Gen Kayani attended and the issue of American national Raymond Davis, charged with killing of two Pakistanis in Lahore.
Expressing its satisfaction over the state of operational preparedness of the army during the conference held at the General Headquarters, the top military brass resolved to safeguard the country from internal and external threats. “The conference was part of regular monthly meetings,” an ISPR statement said.
“The forum took a comprehensive overview of the security situation in the country and discussed various professional matters. The participants expressed satisfaction over the state of operational preparedness of the army,” the statement said. A source privy to consultations said the meeting took up various issues related to the security of country, adding that the military commanders also “informally” discussed the contentious issue of Raymond Davis.
“Davis’ issue was not part of the conference’s agenda, but owing to its significance the matter was discussed informally and the army chief also took the military commanders into confidence about his conversation with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Munich, on the sidelines of Afghan security talks,” he said. The conference reviewed the latest situation on country’s borders with Afghanistan and India and the ongoing anti-terrorism military operations in various Tribal Areas.
“The commanders resolved that the army would safeguard the country against external and internal threats and would continue with its efforts to root out the menace of terror from the tribal areas,” the source said. He said the commanders also deliberated upon the political situation and the state of country’s economy.
