The West Indies cricket team justified its pre-tournament favourite status by lifting the ICC World Twenty20 2012 crown in sensational fashion, as it outclassed hosts Sri Lanka in every department to seal a win by 36 runs on Sunday.
It was West Indies’ first global title since it won the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 at The Oval in London, handing Sri Lanka a fourth consecutive defeat in the final of an ICC tournament.
The win was inspired by Marlon Samuels, who blasted 78 off 56 balls to drag his side to a fighting total of 137, even though the West Indies scored mere 32 runs in the first 10 overs.
