After making rounds in New York’s subway, the controversial “Support Israel/Defeat Jihad” advertisements are coming to Washington DC’s Metro system.
According to a report published by internet website politico.com, a DC District Court judge ruled on Friday that the ads from the American Freedom Defense Initiative must be placed in a handful of stations in the system by 5 pm Monday.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) had attempted to delay the poster-style displays until November because of concerns within the system’s management about terrorism risks. A spokesman for WMATA said the authority “intends to comply with the order”.
The authority cited the timing of the ad as a reason for delay. The spots were slated to run on September 24, just days after the 11th anniversary of September 11, and the fatal attack on US Ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya amid violence due to an inflammatory Internet video. The system’s police chief said airing the ad while Muslims were “agitated” by the video could present “danger to WMATA’s patrons.”
The ad reads: “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel/Defeat Jihad.”
