US runs TV ads to calm Pakistan tensions

The US government has spent $70,000 to buy airtime on the Pakistani airwaves in hopes of countering fervor around an anti-Islam video created by a California producer.
The ad features Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton saying the government of the United States had absolutely nothing to do with the video.
Running on seven networks, the department of state hopes the TV messages can reach up to 90 million Urdu-speaking viewers.
Ms Nuland said the decision to buy the television ads, identified as paid public service announcements, was not unusual in countries where this is “the norm for getting your message out.”
“I think the sense was that this particular aspect of the president and the secretary’s message needed to be heard by more Pakistanis than had heard it, and that this was an effective way to get that message across,” she said.
She said it would take time to measure the effectiveness of the ads in Pakistan, where yesterday huge crowds again gathered to protest against the video.

    • It's called free speech. The government does not sensor information because people have a right to have a voice. The video is not responsible for how people respond to it. Every individual has a choice about whether they will respond with peace or violence to other people's opinions. Why can't the Pakistan population lead by example by demonstrating how peacefully and lovingly they can make a stand for what they believe in?

  1. Some obscure loon makes a crude internet video and millions dance to the tune like puppets on a string. Look first to your actions and reactions before blaming others for them.

  2. It depicts that Media is always used to direct the thoughts from one direction to an other. spend money and use media as per ur agenda…Our media always play in the hand of the other….BLACK MAILER MEDIA CUrse On You..

  3. Obama has made a fool of the US by letting the incompetent Pakistani administration declare this as a holiday to show their love for prophet .

    • Obama has only made the American fools look more foolish. The Pakistani administration is far more competent than the one at the Blackhouse. White or black, every US president is a bigger idiot than the previous one. if the US government cannot handle obscure loons who make crude internet videos, how can it handle the situation in Pakistan, Afghanisan, Iraq, Iran, Burma, Korea, ……….., the rest of the world. Bush Senior was a gentleman with insight of global affairs and was respected internationally, but after him, the US is lacking good leadership. Ms Victoria Nuland has said, "I think the sense was that this particular aspect of the president and the secretary's message needed to be heard by more Pakistanis than had heard it, and that this was an effective way to get that message across". Ms Nuland, nobody in Pakistan or anywhere on planet Earth (maybe Martians too) is interested in listening to lies aired from the Blackhouse. First keep an eye on the US soil, then if you have time to spare, look elsewhere. The americans who have voted you in, deserve more of your time and vigilance. …………………………. continued…see below (PT please increase the comment size limit).

  4. Ms Nuland, you have said, "I think the sense was ……………….", why "think"? you must be sure about what your seniors have said. Further, "it would take time to measure the effectiveness of the ads in Pakistan". I'll do it for you: ads run time = infinity; effectiveness = zero. Now give me at least $ 700. Thanking you in anticipation. Regards. Oops! I was replying to Observer and ended up advising Ms Nuland. Blame her for it. These ladies ………………… well, they distract me and she is not the only one, another one is, ……………, forget it , she might mind it if i name her. For urdu readers: Usaad Qamar Jalalvi's couplet, "phir is ke baad tumhara bhee naam aaye ga, jo hukm ho to yaheen rokh doon fasaney ko'. I stop here without naming her, but mind you, she is "distraction personified". Sorry Observer, I lost track of your comment. Regards.
