A peaceful and effective strike was observed on Wednesday in the commercial hub of Karachi called by Jamat-e-Islami against the killings of its leader Dr Pervez Mehmud and hundreds of innocent citizens in the city. The strike was observed after the murder of JI party leader and former Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervaiz Mehmood who was shot dead along with a friend late on Monday night near the KDA Chowrangi in Nazimabad.
According to details, more than 150 activists of JI and Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) were arrested by the security agencies on early morning. The Karachi JI Ammer was put under house arrest while Nasrullah Shajeeh and other leadership was also picked up from their houses.
Aerial firing was also reported in some parts of the city which created tension in the areas and compelled the people to stay at their homes. The angry protesters burnt tyres on the National Highway and put obstacles on the road which made it difficult for the traffic to pass.
Public transport was not witness while private vehicles on the roads also remained thin. Due to unavailability of public transport people going to their offices faced difficulties.
Major commercial areas of the city were out of business and effective strike was observed in the areas. On the other hand, unknown men opened fire in Safoora Goth and Gulistan-e-Jauhar and forced the shopkeepers to close down their shops.
None of any incident of major violence was reported in the city during the strike day. The spokesman of Jamat Islami (JI), Zahid Askari, claimed that it’s a peaceful strike in the city after decades and this was the strike wherein the citizens of Karachi participated voluntarily.
“Businessmen, transporters and others joined the strike and recorded their protest against the killings in the city”, said Askari.
The funeral prayer of another activist of JI, Abdul Wahid, was offered at Tibbet Center on Wednesday. Abdul Wahid was shot dead on Tuesday when the participants of the rally resorted to aerial firing on the road of Governor’s House by police.
Thousands of JI activists attended the funeral while the prayer was led by former Ammer JI Sindh Asad Ullah Bhutto. Strict security measures were adopted on the occasion. The funeral procession also protested against the killing of their activists in Karachi.
While addressing the participants of the funeral, the JI Ameer said that target killers are the main ally of government which has given them license to kill. The JI will continue its struggle and will be successful with cooperation of the citizens of Karachi, he said, adding “Our activists are being killed on the order of governor of Sindh”.
The participants moved toward Kosar graveyard of Malir for burial of the deceased.
On the other hand, 11 persons have been killed in incidents of targeted killing which raised the figure up to 42 during the last 48 hours.
Four persons were killed in Garden, Agrataj, Dhobighat and Ramswami areas of the city. The bodies were shifted to civil hospital while bodies were not identified. Police said unknown persons killed such persons and further investigations are under process.
Two persons were killed in Gulistan-e-Johar when they were going home on motor cycle. Unidentified persons chased and shot them. The bodies were shifted to Jinnah Hospital. Both persons belong to the Baloch community.
Unknown persons opened fire in Orangi Town. Four persons got injuries and out of them two succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital. The deceased belonged to Pukhtoon community and were targeted by unknown persons.
A police inspector, Mazhar, was also killed by the firing of unknown person in Naval Colony area of Baldia Town. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital. Another person was killed at MT Khan Road by the firing of unknown person and was shifted to Jinnah Hospital. The deceased was not identified till the filing of the report.
On the other hand, Pakistan Rangers conducted targeted operation in Lyari and Agra Taj Colony. Over 25 persons were arrested in the operation which continued till filing of this report.
That is absolutely true to say that the target killers are main ally of the government. The government should not capitulate before the thugs and accept all unacceptable demands. The PPP members of the assembly are torn in shreds to see their government responsible for disintegration of the province of Sindh. Such is the fear instilled in all walks of life in Karachi that no one is coming forward to expose this ethnic party which are inflicting pain to the province with impunity and it is sickening to hear from some so called top anchors instead of calling spade a spade and name and shame the perpetrators are telling the public about political maturity of this ethnic party by playing their cards right which literally means incessant loss of lives.
