Australian police have raided a string of properties in Melbourne over alleged links to homegrown terrorism, reports said Wednesday.
Australian Federal Police and Victorian police would not confirm the raids, but said an operation was ongoing.
“It’s an ongoing investigation,” a spokeswoman for the Australian Federal Police told AFP, adding that it would be inappropriate to comment further.
The Age newspaper said the raids were linked to the Al-Furqan Islamic Centre in Springvale.
The paper said those targeted in the operation were believed to be involved in “contemplating and getting information” about terrorist activities rather than a full-blown terror plot.
A spokesman for the Al-Furqan centre, which has an Islamic bookstore and runs prayers, classes and youth activities, told Australian Associated Press that police arrived at 6:00am and remained at the centre until evening.
“They wouldn’t allow anyone inside, they just cordoned it off,” the man, who would not give his name, said.
“They took a few things and gave us a receipt.
“Everyone has been taken aback but you always have the feeling that these things can happen,” he said.
Australia has disrupted at least four major homegrown terror plots since the 9/11 attacks on the United States, with 37 of the 38 people prosecuted as a result being Australian citizens.
Last year three men who were found guilty of plotting to attack a Sydney army barracks with high-powered weapons, and shoot as many people as possible to further their vision of Islam, were jailed for 18 years.

I lived 6 years in UK, left back to Ozz few months after Tube/Bus bombing. They homegrown terrorists were UK born and educated, in fact some had degrees and good professions. CONCLUSSION: We have to just wait as our boat muslims (most of them are) will settle, bring up their children and than their "ozzie kids" will bomb our kids. The current terrorists are here thanks to Malcolm Frazer's,Gillard's are on our waiting list. Good luck to all of us.
it's the culture of this religion that breeds these type of people must have something to do to get their religion reconised perhaps that if the people of this country put down their foot to the politcians and steer them in the right direction, perhaps if we get these people to assimulate to this country and perhaps if the leaders reconise that this country is christian country and stop fearing muslims. then we would'nt be in this mess also stop accomadating laws to favor other culture to protect their culture maybe what i am saying multiculturlism is a failure, i'd hate to think of the outcome if we continue in this path maybe we should,the government should stand for those that are genuienlly australians and stop playing politics to satify themselves

agree with all of the above , we will be on a sad road to the end if we allow these people who simply will not adjust or accept our way , its like a cancer , it will spread until all is gone , as humans , when we get cancer we treat it with nuclear medicine , and this is what should be done througout the middle east , and should have been done long ago. They fight amongst themselves in a "holy war"and come here and continue that fight , and none know why.
