UN mission visits Pakistan upon invitation of Govt: FM

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar told the National Assembly on Wednesday that the United Nations Human Rights Working Group on Enforced Disappearances has come to Pakistan on the invitation of the government of Pakistan.
Giving a policy statement at the floor of the House‚ she said that the visit of the Working Group is a part of Pakistan’s ongoing engagements and cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights machinery.
The Minister said the group will not draw conclusions rather it will discuss its findings with the government of Pakistan and will also interact with the media on the 20th of this month.
She dispelled the speculations and misunderstandings that the working group has come to probe the missing persons issue. She said the group will work within its mandate.
She said the visit is a part of global efforts to save human rights and like Pakistan 91 other countries have extended invitation to the UN Working Group to visit their countries.
Hina Rabbani Khar said Pakistan is cooperating with the UN and have ratified a number of instruments for protection of human rights.
She said Pakistan has a strong democratic system with an open vibrant society‚ independent judiciary and media and we are facing our challenges through our own resources.
