Justice Muhammad Asif Jan who expired on August 14, 2012 was the son of late Justice Agha Muhammad Jan. Both served in Lahore High Court, although the father was elevated to the bench in pre-partition days. Justice Muhammad Asif Jan is remembered by his friends, colleagues and near ones for his sharp intellect and wit and yet he had an aura about him which put all in a comfortable mood in his presence with his satirical elegance, a winsome smile and finely chiseled features on a handsome face, he was also a pious person at heart. Despite his somewhat short stature, he stood tall among men and parting with him brought tears to many eyes. However, death is our common lot and as Omar Khayyam put it:-
“The Moving Hand writes and having writ Moves on, neither all your piety nor wit can lure it back to cancel half a line. Nor all your tears wash out a word of it.” He was appointed Assistant Advocate General Punjab in 1975 and served as Deputy Attorney General Pakistan from 1989 till he was elevated to the bench. After his retirement from the Bench he served in various capacities as Member Punjab Public Service Commission and Chairman CPLC. In student days he was the best debater in English during his stay in Govt. College and Law College Lahore.
