A citywide dengue awareness campaign was launched on Sunday in which various government departments and universities took part. In spite of the week-end, Environment Department, the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), Punjab University (PU), University of Engineering & Technology (UET), and various other departments remained open to make the anti-dengue drive a success.
Anti-dengue mosquito kits and leaflets bearing necessary information on how to prevent the mosquito from breeding, hiding, and biting were distributed among the citizens.
Visual aids like hoardings and banners were also put up across the city to bring the citizens around. The campaigners carried out fumigation in different departments as well.
A special walk for the same purpose was organized in Gulberg, in which MPAs, top officials and other notables participated.
Nurses had set up a special camp at Chairing Cross where they handed out awareness leaflets.
While addressing a seminar held in connection with dengue awareness campaign at the Directorate of General Public Relations Punjab, Manager Training Dengue Control Cell, Health Department Punjab, Dr Nadeem Zaka said that collective and individual efforts were needed for completely controlling dengue. “Dengue has also become a social problem; therefore, everyone has to pay special attention to the cleanliness of his house,” he added.
Dr Zaka also provided information about dengue, about preventive measures, symptoms of the disease and its treatment.
He said that on the direction of chief minister Punjab, free diagnoses and treatment facilities were available in all government hospitals. “High dependency units have been set up where trained doctors and staff are available,” he added. He expressed the hope that due to governmental efforts and public participation, the dengue would not form an epidemic during the current year.
Secretary Women Development Department Eram Bukhari said that keeping surroundings clean was essential in order to remain safe from dengue.
She said this during a visit to the officers of Women Development Department, CDCs and Working Women Hostels.
Later, she chaired a meeting in her office to finalize week long events scheduled to culminate on September 2, 2012, which will be marked as ‘Anti-Dengue Day’ in Punjab.
Activities proposed for the week include holding seminars, arranging walks and dissemination of awareness raising material on dengue eradication with a focus on female population. Female members of the provincial assembly, NGOs and representatives of civil society shall be associated in all events to be held in all districts of the Punjab during the campaign.

  1. every fool thinks that doctors must do every thing about dengue, in fact they have nothing to do except treatment

  2. We tend to deal with symptoms than the real cause and problem! Real poblem is sanitation and environment. If you dont have open spaces with rain water, you will not have flies and dangue as a result. Clean it up, improve sanitation and couple it with awareness!
