PPP-MQM making consensus on local govt system

Provincial Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed said the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were deliberating to chalk out a consensus on local government law.
Talking to the media during an Iftaar dinner here on Thursday, the minister expressed that the 2 parties want a LG system which was acceptable to all the people of the province.
The provincial ministers Rauf Siddiqui and Zubair Ahmed, MNA Salahuddin Ahmed and leaders of the MQM were present. “Our negotiations are underway and we want to reach a consensus soon,” he said.
He said that the MQM chief Altaf Hussain propounded the holding of an all parties round table conference in view of the threats the country was facing. The minister also condemned the rising incidence of crime in Karachi saying there was no let-up in the activities of extortion seekers. The Sindh Industries Minister Rauf Siddiqui regretted that the local businessmen and industrialists were transferring their investment abroad.
The minister informed that the MQM chief had offered the government to provide 100,000 volunteers who would help maintain law and order in Karachi. Sindh Minister Zubair Ahmed, MNA Salahuddin Ahmed, Rabita Committee members Shaukat Ali and Ghulam Hyder Raees and other leaders of the MQM also spoke.
