The Pakistan Railways will install CCTV cameras, walk-through gates and scanner at major railway terminals, including Rawalpindi, to improve safety standards.
Talking to APP, an official of the Pakistan Railways said, “The government is making all-out efforts to improve law and order and the CCTV cameras will help railway security personnel monitor the movements of suspicious people, especially terrorists,” he added.
The cameras would be connected to a computer room at the railway stations that would also help the authorities take action against violators of the ban on smoking, he added. About the future plan of the Pakistan Railways, around 275 new locomotives would be added to the fleet to improve its efficiency, he said. He added that container service for Premnagar Dry Port was running successfully while the service had recently been started at Faisalabad Dry Port.
The sources said that around 60 used locomotives were being overhauled, which would offer quality service for further 15 years. The project for doubling the track between Lodhran and Lahore would be completed by December 2012 and would reduce travel time substantially, he added. The freight operation service has also been restarted with more dedication and it would be stepped up with induction of additional locomotives after repairs, he said, adding an emergency plan to repair defective locomotives was in place and the work was being executed on war footing.” The government has allocated Rs 23 billion in the budget 2012-13 for rehabilitation and upgrading infrastructure and acquisition of rolling stock to improve service delivery for the convenience of travelling people.
