Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and Awami Muslim League (AML) President Sheikh Rasheed have agreed on forging an electoral alliance for the upcoming elections.
According to sources, the meeting was held at Khan’s residence on Wednesday in which both parties finalised the formation of an electoral alliance.
During the meeting, both leaders agreed to jointly take part in the next elections and to support each other’s candidate. The PTI also decided that it would not field a candidate against Sheikh Rasheed. The sources said Khan would announce the electoral alliance during Sheikh Rasheed’s public meeting scheduled to be held in Liaquat Bagh on August 13. Both leaders would hold another meeting before the Liaquat Bagh public gathering, the sources added. Rasheed’s repeated defeats are attributed to his ‘betrayal’ of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for supporting former president Pervez Musharraf, following his bloodless coup in 1999. It is noteworthy that a PTI candidate, contesting one of the two by-elections in the city, could not do well against a PML-N contender. Sheikh’s associates were hopeful that this alliance could help Rasheed win back his lost seat.
