Pakistani officials invited Salahuddin Rabbani, an ethnic Tajik and the head of the High Peace Council (HPC) to visit the country after he was elected as chairman of the council, after his father Burhanuddin Rabbani was assassinated in a suicide attack last year. He will be arriving in Pakistan on Wednesday on a two-day visit to spearhead talks with Taliban insurgents.
Salahuddin would meet senior civil and security officials, officials of the ministry of foreign affairs and others to facilitate peace in Afghanistan and the region. He will also hold discussion with Pakistani officials on reconciliation among Afghan factions and Pakistan’s role in peace talks.
Pakistan has already announced its support to Afghan-led reconciliation process and Taliban are ready for negotiations with the US but not with the government in Kabul.
