After a meeting with his brother and a panel of lawyers at Central Jail on Thursday, Dr Shakil Afridi signed attorneys to contest his appeal against his conviction by a tribal court. Dr Afridi, who is imprisoned on allegations of links with militants, would file the appeal with the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) commissioner. The meeting with lawyers was arranged by Idrees Kamal, convener of the Aman Tehreek, through provincial Home and Tribal Affairs Department. It was Dr Afridi’s second meeting with his brother Jamil Afridi and first ever with lawyers. The lawyers included Qamar Nadeem and Samiullah Afridi. The meeting continued for about one hour in the presence of senior officials of the Prisons Department and personnel of secret agencies. Kamal said Dr Afridi’s health was now satisfactory, but that he was facing death threats. He asked the government to ensure the imprisoned medic’s security. Dr Afridi was sentenced to life by the political administration of Khyber Agency under FCR.
