The Indus Hospital’s cardiology department launched its first ever pediatric intervention by performing pulmonic valvuloplasty of an 11-year-old girl.
This procedure marks the beginning of a new era of pediatric cardiac interventions and surgeries at the Indus Hospital. Professor Mehnaz Atiq, Pediatric Cardiologist, AKUH performed the procedure under general anesthesia along with Dr Akhtar Aziz and the rest of the cardiac team at TIH.
Aortic valvuloplasty is the repair of a heart valve using a balloon catheter inside the vessel. The balloon is placed into the aortic valve that becomes stiff from a number of reasons including calcium buildup. The balloon is then inflated in an effort to increase the opening size of the valve and improving blood flow.
The existing Cardiac program already provides services for adults including invasive procedures such as angiography, angioplasty and heart by-pass. Incorporating pediatric facilities now means a leap forward towards the ambition of the hospital’s founders to provide the best and most comprehensive healthcare to the people of Pakistan, completely free of cost.
