KARACHI – With the assistance of a $200-million loan from the World Bank (WB), the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) intends to implement WB’s Natural Gas Efficiency Project for the purpose of reducing unaccounted-for gas (UFG) [gas loss through leakage and other reasons].
Under this project, the SSGC would replace approximately 5,750km of distribution pipeline – excluding the main supply line – during the next five years along with overhead and underground leak survey, and rectification of 1.6 million customers and about 18,700km of network.
SSGC Managing Director Dr Faizullah Abbasi said this in an all-inclusive presentation to the utility’s senior management, and regional, zonal and sub-zonal managers. Abbasi discussed the massive organisational restructuring plan developed by the SSGC last year, and said that the true challenge lies in implementing the plan and, in doing so, ensuring effective control, operational efficiency and accountability for the primary objective of reducing UFG.
He said that the utility’s resolve to fight UFG has greatly affected the SSGC’s operations, stressing that an out-of-the-box approach is imperative to curb the line losses. He also congratulated the team that had drafted the proposal.
