Interior secretaries, LEAs under SHC hammer
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to federal and provincial secretaries of Interior as well as the law enforcement agencies in target killing incident case in Karachi.
A two-member bench of SHC comprising acting Chief Justice Maqbool Baqir and Justice Aqil Abbasi was hearing the petition filed by Iqbal Kazmi over increasing incidents of target killings in Karachi. During the hearing, the petitioner told the court that various applications had been submitted from 2009 in the SHC for hearing the ever deteriorating law and order situation in the city but of no avail as those applications were still pending. He urged the court to resume hearing on the pending applications. Kazmi also pleaded the court that the government had failed to overcome increasing target killing incidents in the city while lives and properties of citizens were not secure. He said that so far at least 773 innocent people had been killed in target killing incidents only in current year: at least 98 people were shot dead in January, 115 in February, 117 in March, 165 in April, 182 in May and at least 96 in June. The court accepting the constitutional application for hearing issued notices to federal secretary Interior, Sindh home secretary, law enforcement agencies and SHOs of at least 54 concerned police stations located in the city.
