  1. Explaining the reasons for Pakistan being in the list of a failed state, Kaplan said the root cause of these manifold failures, in many minds, is the very artificiality of Pakistan itself: a cartographic puzzle piece sandwiched between India and Central Asia that splits apart what the British Empire ruled as one indivisible subcontinent.

“Pakistan claims to represent the Indian subcontinent’s Muslims, but more Muslims live in India and Bangladesh put together than in Pakistan. In the absence of any geographical reason for its existence, Pakistan, so the assumption goes, can fall back only on Islamic extremism as an organizing principle of the state,” Kaplan wrote.

“But this core assumption about what ails Pakistan is false. Pakistan, which presents more nightmare scenarios for American policymakers than perhaps any other country, does have geographical logic,” he wrote. Kaplan said only the worst African hellholes, Afghanistan, Haiti, Yemen, and Iraq rank higher than Pakistan on this year’s Failed States Index.

  2. Should pakistanis be pround of this. Look still the whole government machinery is is busy protecting the convicted prime minister and a most corrupt president and his cronies. This government must be eliminated with mass revolution otherwise there is no hope for country.

    • No. 13 ..hmmm.
we still have some room. I think by the end of this year we will make it in top 10. Go Zardari Go.

  3. so what are parameters of this failed state notion? just another media tool to access ones country. It depends how you define a failed state and who is judging it!
Comparing Pakistan with Afghanistan for example, imagine this after American left with their dollars. Though Pakistan has most courrpt government in power and hostile environment due to war on terror, Pakistan is very reselient country and will not fail due unsung heroes and the paralel untaxed economy!

  4. Wishful thinking, it quenches the frustrated western mind set which despite all efforts see the country still in one piece, what about Greece, Spain other Euro countries on the verge of collapse, begging bail outs, leaving euro, billions of debt its time for Europe to worry about itself rather than telling us whether we are failed state or not, it is a matter of time before we will see USA and other developed countries in a spin
