UHS to send ten PhD students to UoL

The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore would send ten PhD students every year for study at the University of Liverpool (UoL), UK as part of a unique collaboration between the two institutions. A formal agreement was signed here at UHS on Thursday by UHS Vice Chancellor Prof I.A. Naveed and UoL Executive Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Ian Greer UoL.
Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Centre for Lifelong Learning, Prof Ian Willis, Director of Studies in Learning and Teaching Dr Janet Strivens, UHS Registrar, Dr Asad Zaheer and Controller of Examinations, Prof Junaid S. Khan were also present.
The agreement lays the basis of close cooperative between the two universities in the fields of research and academics.
According to the agreement, UoL would waive research support fee in various academic programmes, and would also provide a scholarship to each Pakistani student to hold the tuition fee for the full term. UHS shall ensure that only top quality students were proposed for enrolment at Liverpool. These candidates shall subsequently be interviewed through video conference by a panel of Liverpool faculty.
“We all are excited about this. In next five years, about 50 Pakistani students will go for PhD studies at Liverpool; it will be a great success and benefit for both the universities,” UHS VC said.
Prof. Naveed also said that the project had the backing of the British Council and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
“It’s a showcase for the certain kind of expertise the Liverpool has to offer in an international setting and as a result of this we are starting to get enquiries from other universities for similar projects. This is an example of how learning and teaching projects can create connections that may lead to research outcomes,” Dr. Willis said.
PU college of arts condoles death of Mehdi Hassan: The teachers and students of Punjab University College of Arts & Design have expressed their heartfelt grief and sorrow over the demise of Mehdi Hassan. Principal Prof Dr Rahat Naveed Masud said Mehdi Hasan was a great singer who will be remembered forever.
Coordinator of Musicology Israr Hasain Chishti, who had also been a student of the Ghazal King threw light on the life of Mehdi Hasan. It was announced that the college will arrange a condolence reference for Mehdi Hasan at the College of Art and Design.
PU launches book ‘Roshni Ka Safar’: The Punjab University hosted the launch ceremony of Col (r) Muhammad Pervez’s book titled ‘Roshni Ka Safar’ at the Al-Raazi Centre for Undergraduate Studies on Thursday.
PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran presided over the ceremony which was also attended by renowned religious scholar Maulana Ilyas Kashmiri, columnists Atta-ur-Rehman, Auriya Maqbool Jan, senior faculty members, scholars and a large number of students.
Addressing the ceremony, Dr Kamran said the literate nations dominate the illiterate ones.
He said the nations that ponder and think carefully before making decisions and implementations remain successful. The VC advised the students to follow the teachings of the Holy Quran.
Mujahid stated that real martyrs were those who fight against the enemies of Islam and not those who waste their lives in sectarianism.
He asked the youth to think positively, be patient and spend their lives in accordance with the teaching of the Quran and Sunnah.
Dr Kamran also advised the students that obtaining an education should be their foremost target because progress was not possible without education. He commended the efforts of Col (r) Muhammad Pervez and termed his book a good addition to religious books.
