After series of diplomatic dialogues, Pakistan and Russia were coming closer by each passing day, this was stated by the acting Governor Sindh Nisar Ahmed Khuhro while speaking on the eve of Russian Federation National Day. Lauding the services rendered by the “wonderful, friendly and active” Consul General Andrey V. Demidov, Khuhro stated: “We are pleased to be here where every year the number of friends increases. That speaks of your interaction with the people of Pakistan and especially the people of Karachi. And this is what the diplomats are for – to bring the people together, make them understand each other, comprehend the problems faced by them and this way we move forward to become a better country”. Pakistan believed in harmony, democracy, friendship, economic growth and diplomatic cooperation, he said, adding that he wished that Pakistan and Russia – having borders not very far from each other – would become bigger partners for the well being of the people of both countries.
Russian Consul General noting that Pakistan was the only Muslim nation possessing nuclear weapons assured that Russia recognized its significant function in the modern world: “We do not underestimate the role of Pakistan in ensuring regional stability and security, in the settlement of Afghan issue and in promoting regional economic integration”. During 2011 presidents of Pakistan and Russia met six times at the sidelines of different international forums emphasizing the importance of developing bilateral economic cooperation and trade, he added. During such meetings, energy, steel, telecommunications and space technologies were identified as leading avenues of cooperation, he pointed. Demidov also told that President Vladimir Putin had accepted the invitation extended by the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and would soon visit Pakistan.
