The recent fire at the Services Hospital which killed 10 newborns and injured 18 others occurred due to the non-existence of a maintenance and repair (MR) department.
YDA spokesman Dr Salman Kazmi said no proper MR department or a biomedical engineer was available in any hospital in Lahore, while just two to three employees were hired on daily wages to look after the electromagnetic equipment in the hospital.
He said there should be a proper MR department headed by a biomedical engineer in every hospital, otherwise such incidents resulting from short-circuits would not be controlled.
He stated that the government was spending huge amounts of money on purchasing medical equipment but it was not ready to set up the MR department to look after the equipment.
He stressed the establishment of an MR department along with hiring biomedical engineers immediately to avert such incidents in the future.
