Sri Lanka have won 52, lost 27 and abandoned six in 85 one-day international matches played at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo where the third match of the five match series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played on Wednesday (June 13).
Pakistan have a good record against Sri Lanka at this ground. They have won six, lost five and abandoned one in 12 matches against the Islanders. Overall, Pakistan have won 11, lost six and abandoned one in 18 matches played here.
The R. Premadasa Stadium, known prior to June 1994 as the Khetterama Cricket Stadium, after the area of Colombo it stands in, was the brainchild of the late Sri Lanka President Ranasinghe Premadasa, who championed the development of this colossal 35,000-seater concrete bowl, the biggest stadium in the country.
The inaugural one-day international was played on April 5, 1986 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by nine wickets with 70 balls to spare when the first ever limited overs international match was played between the two teams on August 3, 1994. Opener Saeed Anwar hit an explosive 70 off 83 balls as Pakistan raced home. He might have made his fifth one-day hundred against Sri Lanka if rain had not cut eight overs from Pakistan’s innings and reduced their target to 169 – which they achieved with nearly 12 overs in hand.
Anwar began with a mixture of aggression and caution, but he and Inzamam-ul-Haq ploughed into the bowling, knocking off 98 in 17 overs after Aamir Sohail had fallen to Muralitharan’s off-spin for a rapid 38. The only other highlight for a partisan crowd of 40,000 was a one-day international career-best 77 from makeshift opener Jayasuriya, who put on 86 with debutant Sanjeeva Ranatunga.
Pakistan also recorded a 11-run win over Sri Lanka when two teams met last time in a limited overs international match here on February 26, 2011.
Shahid Afridi took four wickets and Misbah-ul-Haq notched a second successive half century as Pakistan upstaged Sri Lanka by 11 runs in a highly-charged World Cup Group A match. Shahid Afridi, who became the 11th player to take 300 wickets in one day internationals, finished with four for 34 to help Pakistan defend a 278-run target, as they restricted Sri Lanka to 266 for nine in 50 overs for their second win in the World Cup.
