Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed its utmost concern and has strongly condemned the life threats to Ms Asma Jehangir, former President of Supreme Court Bar Association.
In a resolution adopted by the Executive Committee here Tuesday, the PBC said it is shameful that a conspiracy to assassinate Asma Jehangir is reported to have been hatched by the establishment and undemocratic forces. It condemned very strongly those behind the plan and conspiracy for assassinating Ms Asma Jehangir and demanded of the government to unearth the conspirators and take stern action against all responsible actors and planners. The Council urged the Federal and Punjab Governments to provide full and food proof security to the former President of SCBA.
The Council warned that if any untoward incident happened to her, there will be an immeasurable reaction of lawyers throughout Pakistan and apart from launching a country wide protest movement, they may also go to any extent to defeat the nefarious designs of the establishment.
It noted with grave concern and disapproval the dubious role of the establishment which it said has caused great damage to the country over the years. The PBC said it is the duty and responsibility of the democratically elected parliament to take decisions that strengthen the country.
The PBC referred to increasing tendency of curbing independent voices for establishment of the Rule of Law and continuity of the democratic process through brutal force and warned that it is most harmful for democratic functioning of the country and even its survival. It further said that independent and progressive intellectuals striving for the Rule of Law and strengthening of democratic institutions are of great value and must be encouraged and supported in the larger national interests.
