The World Oceans Day 2012 will be observed on Friday (today) across the world including Pakistan to raise awareness of the challenges humanity faces to protect the world’s oceans. World Oceans Day was first introduced in 1992 and officially recognized in 2008 to raise awareness of the crucial role the sea plays as sources of food, oxygen and medicine. Numerous events will be held around the world to mark the World Oceans Day. The theme of this year’s World Oceans Day2012 is “Youth: TheNext Wave for Change.” The World Oceans Day is a global observance and not a public holiday. The world’s oceans play a key role for life on Earth. According to the UN, they are “the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, as well as a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere”.
