Peerzadas demand Rs 1 billion from Pakistan Today

The Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop has demanded Rs 1 billion from Pakistan Today for “defaming” the group by reporting the termination of aid for its “Sim, Sim Hamara’ program by USAID because of alleged financial irregularities and abuse of aid money.
The legal notice served on the newspaper states that the Rafi Peer group had “adhered strictly and transparently with all USAID compliance guidelines pertaining to procurement, finance and human resource, and all accounts pertaining to the abovementioned heads had been duly subjected to internal and external audits by independent auditors employed by RPTW and USAID and no iota of financial embezzlement, misappropriation and fudging of accounts had been raised against RPTW”.
However, a US State Department spokesman on Tuesday confirmed that funding for the Pakistan Sesame Street Program had been terminated after allegations of fraud and abuse of aid money against the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop were found to be credible. State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner said the Pakistan Sesame Street Program totaled $20 million and that $6.7 million has already been spent by the Rafi Peer Theater Workshop.
The project was canceled after several calls were made to an anti-fraud hotline set up by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Pakistan alleging misappropriation of funds. The US looked into the allegations and found them credible. A full investigation is still underway as to how and where the money was spent.
“No one is questioning, obviously, the value and positive impact of this kind of programming for children,” said Toner. “But this is about allegations of corruption.”
“We deemed that the allegations were serious enough that we wanted to suspend or cut off the program until we were able to complete this investigation,” he said.
“We do acknowledge the programming is beneficial, but we had what we believe were credible allegations, so rather than continue to throw good money after bad, we thought it was prudent to cut off this program,” Toner said. “These are valuable programmes teaching kids worldwide values as well as math, reading skills, et cetera. This is simply two very different cases – but in the latest case, in Pakistan, concerns that US taxpayer money was being misused,” he added.

They are known to my younger brothers and cousins. very talented family and sons of very famous Art / Darama giant of the country. Mr. Rafi Peerzada. Faizaan and Sadaan were very good in ART. They will draw pictures at the time in school which were very nice and they will give it to their friends and sell.

As far as i can remember, they usually do those Monday evening 7:30 PM commercial sit comms where usually a Peerzada remains surrounded by a bunch of 35-somthing female ramp models trying to crack a boring joke or two!!   12. I can't believe that this newspaper is so incredible that they are STILL reporting fake news. USAID has still not provided RPTW with any evidence of fraud, corruption or mismanagement. In fact they have changed their views over the the course of 24 hours as is evident by this statement.
    “A while back we received a phone call on our anti-fraud hotline and the person reported discrepancy in the “Sim Sim Hamara” project with credible evidence, as a result of which we started an investigation into the matter,” said Robert Raines, the spokesperson for USAID in Pakistan.”Since the matter is still under investigation we can’t conclude whether it is a fraud case or not and something substantial can only be said after the completion of the investigation,” the spokesperson said.
    It is clear that USAID has not concluded whether fraud has taken place but obviously Pakistan today has.
    Your article is laughable but kudos to you for keeping your head up and carrying on with such reporting, you will pay soon enough!

  14. I don't know about the allegations, But i am sure All is fake, all I know is that the RPTW has worked bloody hard in promoting local art and culture in Pakistan and overseas. The group has made stars out of poor artistes who truly needed promotion, produced the most brilliant puppet shows for the children of Pakistan, executed the biggest performing arts festivals in the country, and countless other projects.

If RPTW employed their own family, who did the USAID think they were awarding the project to? Every contract contender has to provide the list of key perssonel and their names in the proposal they submit to the USAID. Where were USAID then? They knew well enough who they were awarding the contract to so this allegation seems nonsensical. And so far as the procurement procedures are concerned USAID oversees each and everyone of them. All procurement procedures are subject to constant inside and outside auditing. Where were the USAID when the supposed fraud was taking place? Pathetic journalism. I'm not saying they didn't commit corruption. But please provide clear evidence before publihsing on the front page of your amateur newspaper

Just to add to your information, speaking from experience, this is all USAID does. Involve in meaningless little things and not let anything worthwhile happen. The way it appears to me, since RPTW is a local implementor, there was no way money cud've sent back to the US as normally USAID projects are implemented by US firms. And if they should not be concerned by their corruption, why shut them down?

      By creating the Sim Sim Hamara program they have attempted to provide basic education to children of Pakistan who do not have access to schools. They don't need to apologize to anyone, however as Pakistanis we need to thank them for their services.

  32. I do know that USAID had informed RPTW of their withdrawal of funds long before this story broke and that there was not mention of corruption or fiscal misappropriation. the USAID presence in Pakistan is being slashed from around 140 projects to 35…
    also having worked with USAID i know that the procurement, purchasing, HR and auditing is closely monitored by USAID EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. there is no spending or movement without their approval. Basically they are closing shop in Pakistan and not wanting to say that they are running away from their commitments. easier to cry fraud, specially when someone else has cried it first. Also to date there has been ABSOLUTELY NO MOVEMENT TOWARDS AN INVESTIGATION RPTW HAS NOT EVEN BEEN NOTIFIED THAT THERE MAY BE NEED FOR ONE. as i said before the audits are done in close collaboration with USAID and both internal and external auditors, there is no room for corruption

    Please spread it guys. We should not take any crap from stupid and fake allegations any-more. It's the time to open our eyes and see what (so-called) "they" don't want us to see. Tell them we're grown ups now and refuse to accept these allegations without evidence. I think it's more of a jealousy factor that Sim Sim Hamara (A Pakistani version of Sesame Street) appeared to be a huge success and seemed to be an amazing quality program for the children of Pakistan for the first time that it was nearly impossible to match the standards so it's a way to defame not only Peerzada (who have not only done great things for arts and culture in Pakistan for Pakistan but for the children and artists all over the Pakistan) but also Pakistan. Everybody should ask for evidences guys and that's the most sensible way to take it up.

  37. It is so saddening to see how quick we are to condemn our own people. No other country discredit their own like this… We should learn from the episodes such as Mumbai 26 and Raymond Davis. Unlike India and US we are always ready to condemn our own people…
