An important meeting of the parliamentary committee will be held today (Tuesday) to take up the issue of appointment of new Chief Election Commissioner on recommendations of the prime minister and leader of opposition.
All the concerned respondents are stuck with their proposed names for the Chief Election Commissioner and the Awami National Party (ANP) has decided to present recommendations on the subject.
The committee has to approve the name to be appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner within 15 days. Nominated by the PM the refusal of Justice (R) Zahid Qurban Alvi has prompted the PM to go for a new name.
According to 18th amendment, in case both of them fail to reach a consensus on any one candidate, both Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition would forward the list of three candidates each to the Parliamentary Committee, with one-third representation, to decide from these lists with majority vote a candidate to be appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner.
