Talk what you can walk, China tells Pakistan

Though China publicly backed the Pakistani stance over its continued tension with the US, Beijing sent a private message to Islamabad to avoid taking “extreme positions” in its relationship with Washington.
Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi’s recent trip to the country was focused at talking sense into Pakistani civil and military leaders, according to Khaleej Times. The vital outcome of the visit was China’s remarks that the world must recognise Pakistan’s “huge sacrifices” in the war on terror and back its efforts to safeguard its “sovereignty, territorial integrity and dignity”. The carefully crafted statement was aimed straight at the US, which has begun questioning Pakistan’s stance in the fight against terrorism. But away from the public diplomacy, the Chinese foreign minister conveyed “a word of wisdom” to Pakistani leadership on how to deal with the US. Beijing wants an end to the lingering stalemate between Pakistan and the US.
“China wants Pakistan to have a balanced approach in its dealings with the US,” said a top Pakistani official familiar with the high-level discussions. The official, however, did not elaborate if the “balanced approach” meant Islamabad should stop asking for an unconditional apology for the Salala strike. China has serious differences with the US on many issues, but the two countries also had many areas of convergence, the official said. “And that’s what they expect from us … to build our relationship where we have points of convergence with Americans,” the official said. He said Beijing had encouraged Islamabad to sort out its differences with the US, including the stalled supplies to foreign forces in Afghanistan.

  1. China can be less of a friend in spirit. And the Pakistani govt needs to do more to do that, create cultural social exchange with china on a larger scale so that pakistani society develops a connection with our biggest ally!

  2. We need friends not opponents. We need business, education and a prominent place in the region. Only US and West can help in that target. Stop living in dreams and emotions.

  3. We are an independent sovereign nation. We will not comprise our ghairat, china if you claim to be our "all weather" friend, then its about time you show us your support in this "bad weather". We dont need a lecture.

  5. China is right. A Nation should have a WISE policy, looking beyond the current scenarios. Look atleast 50 years to 100 years. USA has the capacity to lead the world for the next 100 years atleast, even with the current global economic conditions. So, Pakistanis should not make any emotional decisions. You can have some disagreements but a Nation should not act like a 2 years old small child. The Convergence of Interests is a useful word, the policy makers in Pakistan should consider this as an opportunity to develop "meaningful, mutual interest based, visionary" national policy. Don't just focus on little event, here and there, but Pakistanis should focus on how to improve the economy, and being angry at US and West, for small reasons will not help at all. These are LEADING economies of the world. Look at where South Korea, Japan, China are today. They all had Major disagreement, even had been at War with the US at times, but they ACTED Maturely, and gained the most out of WISE thinking.

  6. Pakistani's think not through their mind but through their heart which leads to confusion in the name of Quomi Ghairat, waqar etc, which are not in the national interest.

  9. China talks a lot of sense that we have been lacking for sixty-five years. The sense that we must learn to live and exist as a nation of law abiding, courteous citizens of the world. The sense that we cannot continue to live with and in the traditions of the past, like asking for AID. The sense that we must change our laws and habits of governance. The sense that 'goonda gardi' cannot be allowed to flourish with impunity. The sense that the law of the land is SUPREME and equal for all citizens. The sense that confrontation only leaves the weaker nation with a broken nose. Salams.
