England were 10 for two in their second innings, needing a further 181 runs to reach their victory target of 191, at the close of the fourth day of the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s here Sunday. Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott were both nought not out after West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach rocked England with a sensational spell of two wickets for seven runs in eight balls. He had England captain and first innings century-maker Andrew Strauss caught in the gully for one and nightwatchman James Anderson caught behind for six.
Next ball Roach thought he had Trott lbw but Aleem Dar turned down the tourists’ appeal. The West Indies reviewed the decision but as replays showed the ball only just clipping the stumps, Pakistan umpire Dar’s original verdict was upheld. England were set a target of 191 to win the first Test against the West Indies at Lord’s after bowling the tourists out for 345 in their second innings on the fourth day here on Sunday.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul, officially the world’s best batsman, made 91 to follow his first innings 87 not out with the left-hander batting for more than 10 hours in the match. Stuart Broad took four wickets for 93 runs after he claimed Test-best figures of seven for 72 in West Indies’s first innings 243.
That gave the fast-medium bowler a match haul of 11 for 165. It was the first time any player had taken 10 or more wickets in a Lord’s Test since South Africa’s Makhaya Ntini returned figures of 10 for 220 in 2003. And Broad’s match figures were the best by an England bowler in a Lord’s Test since Ian Botham’s 11 for 140 against New Zealand in 1978. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Marlon Samuels repelled England with a century stand as the West Indies batted through the fourth morning without losing a wicket. At lunch, West Indies were 212 for four in their second innings. Left-hander Chanderpaul, officially the world’s best batsman, was 73 not out and Samuels 79 not out, with their unbroken fifth-wicket partnership now worth 147 runs.
