KITZBUEHEL – Italy’s Siegmar Klotz escaped serious injury after suffering a nasty fall during the men’s World Cup downhill here on Saturday.
The Italian, starting 33rd on a course considered the toughest on the alpine skiing circuit, misjudged a jump, caught too much air and landed nastily on his back. His head whiplashed on the icy Streif track, one ski flying off and propelling him into the red safety netting that lines the course.
The 23-year-old received immediate treatment on the slope before being airlifted to the nearby St Johann hospital by helicopter. But Klotz escaped relatively unmarked from his fall.
