President Asif Ali Zardari has said the government would honour its commitment with the people of south Punjab for the creation of a new province in its current tenure. He said this during a meeting with parliamentarians belonging to South Punjab.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani also attended the meeting. The president said Pakistan People’s Party was in an egalitarian party believing in the nation building process and not merely in the politics of sloganeering or getting votes. The president termed the demand of the people of South Punjab for a separate province “legitimate”. He said the new province would provide the needed opportunities to the people for their socio-economic development. The president pointed out that some elements were trying to subvert the will of the people by creating confusion but he said all such attempts would be foiled.
He urged the parliamentarians to take the message of the party to the people of Central Punjab that the creation of a new province was not against anyone but a part of the nation building process. He said less economic opportunities‚ lower literacy rate and limited job opportunities had resulted in creating a sense of despondency among the youth of south Punjab.
He hoped that the creation of new province would usher in a new era of socio-economic development.
