Top senior army officials on Friday visited to the Haripur Central jail and examined the security of the jail to avert an incident like the Bannu jailbreak.
Police sources said three senior army official visited to the jail and met the superintendent and deputy superintendent, adding that they exchange their views over the security of the jail. “The army official inspected internal and external security of the jail and shared their views with the authorities,” the source said, asking not to be named. Another source confirmed the visit and said as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police was planning to hand control of the jail to the army after the Bannu jail incident, therefore, they army officials might have visited the jail for inspecting the security measures. After the Bannu jailbreak incident, the provincial government and police department decided to hand control of four provincial jails to the army. Police authorities are of the stance that they did not have sufficient technology and equipment to keep the jails safe from militants’ attacks. A top police official told Pakistan Today, “We have requested the army to take over four central jails and they may take control of these jails in the next couple of days.” “There are various militants in these jails and police have limited equipment to take care of these militants,” he maintained. “If the army takes control of Bannu, Haripur, Peshawar and Dera Ismail Khan jails, it will be easy for police to take care of the remaining 18 jails across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he said.
