At least five people, including two children, were killed when a mortar shell hit a moving passenger vehicle in the Shalobar Qambarkhel area in Khyber Agency on Friday.
The victims, belonging to the same family, were on their way from Shalobar Bara to the Jalozai refugee camp. Several others were injured in the attack. The political administration of Khyber Agency had directed dwellers from all over Shalobar Qambarkhel to leave the area as the security forces were embarking on a military action against militants. Authorities have confirmed that 60,000 families left the area and were now internally displaced persons (IDPs). According to an official, majority of the IDPs from the Bara region were living with their relatives or in rented houses in Peshawar. However, thousands of others were residing in Jalozai tents or makeshift villages. Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent Police Banaras Khan survived a bomb attack in Chughal Pura in Peshawar on Friday. Unidentified men planted an improvised explosive device (IED) along the roadside, which went off when a police vehicle reached the spot. The occupants of the vehicle, including the DSP remained unhurt. Authorities confirmed that Khan was the target of the terrorist act.
