The pedestrians in twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have demanded of the concerned authorities for marking zebra crossings on main crossing points on the roads. A pedestrian talking to APP, said that there are a lot of people crossing the roads and traffic is also moving fast and it can cause fatal accidents. They called for marking of zebra crossings to facilitate the commuters to cross the highways safely. Sameer Ahmed, a resident of TNT colony said that in the absence of any zebra crossing, he always cross the main highway to G-7 sector despite knowing that it is very risky practice for him.
He said that at least zebra crossing would give right to the pedestrians to cross the road safely. Sher Muhammad, an old citizen at Zero Point bus stop, said that he was waiting on the roadside for crossing but due to heavy traffic it is not easy for an old man like him to cross the road. He said that after reconstruction and widening the main highways and making them signal free, it is also essential for the authorities to take care of the pedestrian rights.
The commuters also call for creating awareness among the motorists regarding zebra crossing and right of pedestrians. When contacted an official of CDA, said that the authorities already approved over-head bridges to facilitate the pedestrian on the roads. He said that on some of the important avenues including 7th avenue, 9th avenue and Islamabad Expressway over-head bridges installed by the civic body for the purpose.
