US Senator John Kerry, a long-time pro-Pakistan voice on the Capitol Hill, has joined the Obama administration in warning Pakistan over alleged sanctuary for Afghan militants, raising prospects of American recourse to “self-help” options.
The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee raised the question of the “continued danger of a sanctuary war being prosecuted against the forces” in Afghanistan at a hearing on upcoming NATO summit in Chicago.
“I am a veteran of a sanctuary war and I know how insidious it can be, and I personally think that it is unacceptable to have a zone of immunity for acts of war against armed forces and against the collective community that is trying accomplish what it is trying to accomplish,” the Democratic senator said in a statement.
“That means Pakistan has to become more assertive and more cooperative, and we may have to resort to other kinds of self-help depending on what they decide to do,” the influential lawmaker added.
A House of Representatives panel has already moved a resolution to condition economic and military assistance for Pakistan with reopening of supply lines and its performance in support of American efforts in a number of counterterrorism areas in Afghanistan.
Pakistan continues to be a target of criticism and mounting pressure by Congressional leaders as Washington races against time to show some degree of progress towards stability in Afghanistan at the Chicago Summit later this month.
Pakistan is passing through the most critical phase of its existence. One wrong decision could wreak havoc on the country. We must once and for ever stop the jihadi adventurism, drive out of country all such elements who have their own ulterior motives. Nothing is more important than the country. In the name of honor so much damage has already been done. I hope that our leadership will succeed in pulling the country back from the brink.
Passed decade have be unique. And opportunities of a life time is lost…
The words 'leadership', 'country' and 'success' gives me a pause …
The well cultivated marshal mentality among the Pakistanis compels their leadership to talk tough for their own success (and at the end wind up painting themselves in the corner). That's a fertile ground for the crooks and criminals to thrive — not for a true national leader enter the arena (because wisdom does not hold a place)…
Until Pakistan makes a 180 degree U-turn on that, the picture is going to remain bleak …
'crooks and criminals'* — people like Musharaff…
(at his own time, things looked good because resources were pouring in but things started becoming visible towards the end of his term and benefactors started clamping down to it's current state …)
we get financial aid for the luxuries of rulers. The poor is already dying let USA stop every penny so that we could learn to live within our means. Look at the convicted Primer Minister only 6 guests were invited by UK> but the gilani took with him crew of 76 persons. Can we afford this money which is borrowed from others. Sham on ..
We are not in the position to oppose the global wisdom…..It is in the interest of our country to behave like a civilized country, and this should be evident from our actions and behavior…..We should realize that our society is mainly the victim of terrorism…If we couldn't take actions today then we should be ready to face the consequences in future…Aa Bail Muje Maar…
Thanks to this incompetent government. Pakistan now stand at extremely critical phase
These seem to be comments of a PMLN or PTI worker. Pakistan need not an enemy to destroy it. Contrarily, it is our so called enemy who avoided to avail of all the opportunities that were prvided by Mullah-military alliance, Punjabi elite classes, Punjab dominated media, Punjab dominated military, and bureaucracy thru their promotion of fanatic, terrorist, anti-Sindh, anti-Baluchistan, and anti-KP policies. We are an international parriah state because of mindless policies of above-mentioned powerful sections of our society. In their presence we need no enemy. Rather, it is our power enemies who have saved Pakistan in their own interest.
Well said, brother!
Our long standing policy of strategic depth has proved to be a strategic disaster for Pakistan. Our establishment is more interested in Afganistan rather than the safety and security of its own country. It has brought our beloved nation to the point where even our friends are deserting us. Just like 1971. May Allah have mercy on this land.
usa has come to stay and bring pakistan down anyhow. dont be blind guys, look at syria..libya…afghanistan…..pakistan…Iraq…Yemen….somalia….

In the last thirty years the mental attitude of the nation has been tuned to respond to impulses sent by the West, specially from Washington DC. We have been tuned to think negatively and to reason with the West is considered the worst taboo! Leaders who lack both character and moral courage have been thrusted upon us to carry the bidding of their mentor/s. The real weasel if it came across our present leadership will run and hide and ask themselves; What are those critters they outsmart us by a long league!

It is result of nothing but our financial dependence on America. we are suppose to behave like an obedient student. Our government has no guts to stand on our own sources.

If there was ever a time for a brave general (not kiayani the coward) to come forward and take over, this is the time. The public would be very sympathatic to anyone who would free them from zardari/gillani. There people have ruined Pakistan and it will take 15 years to even get back to where we were when Musharraf was president. We can make a good case for treason on all of them and hang them. Quicker the better. Just for fun we should also hang a few ppp and pml workers 🙂
Free them from these day robbers, and then what? Try and get rid of the corrupt General in another 3 years?…then what? elect an official and then what? …. try to get them booted in 2 years? The same nonsense has been going on for its entire existence, the main reason is the people of Pakistan and their bad luck for having such pathetic criminals as their leaders.
Don't you get it? The people will once again elect some criminal to represent them in the world. The person who will literally lick a dog's ass for 1 million rupees. It is our fate,
I only see Imran Khan as the kind of a person who can actually take a stand and shun comments from stupid senators like this who think the world is their playground. To hell with this!!! MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION!!!!
How many Generals have pending corruption charges or allegations against them? Maybe three or four. How many politicians have pending corruption chages or allegations against them? Almost all of them. Who says we have to have democracy to progress? Should I start counting the countries that have done exceptionally well without democracy? The bottom line is the quality of life for the people. It doesn't matter how its achieved. What matters is that it is achieved. I like Imran Khan. I think he is a good guy with good imtentions. However, I also think that he is naive. His statements may make for good slogans but the are not realistic. Do you really believe that a country like Pakistan can take on the world's only super power? Can we afford sanctions? Can we afford to be isolated from the world? Can we afford to not do trade in US dollars? Will any other country do business with us in our currency? Can we afford to keep our US built planes in the air without US spare parts? I can go on and on. Lets be realistic. We need consistency and stability. Democracy has not, and will not, provide that to us. We need one person incharge who can put the country on the right track and let him take control for atleast 15 years.

TazeemJan, please don't get me started again. Read my comments again and then tell me if they sound like a pmln or pti worker. If you need help understanding, ask me. I'll be more than happy to translate. Don't just paste and copy your comments to every post. It makes you look stupid.
I just you to read following books to enlighten yourself, intead of writing mindless comments invoking superficial logic. First, keep in mind if your favourite army takes over, it will never dole out power to ImranKhan. Maybe it will be a person like you as PM, but surely not ImranKhan. He is egoistic and stubborn,
Jabal, did I say that army will dole out power to Imran Khan? And can you define "superficial logic" please? And what books were you referring to? I didn't see any names of books in your comment. Are you related to AzeemJan?

Unless the people of Pakistan fix their ways this is what's suppose to happen. Anyways i wouldn't be too worried about what these people say. They keep on striking our legs and then ask us why are we limping. This whole OBL theory was made to invade countries and that's the stupid card they keep playing even though they declared him dead. What utter non-sense. We are seriously sleeping.
So what?
It can be compensated by being sleep deprived for the next decade …
The writer of this article seems naive considering that he has mentioned that Kerry was Pakistans "friend" so far. The actual fact of the matter is the "good cop bad cop" routine that has been used over here, while others talked tough Kerry tried to be the "good cop" and Pakistan duly obliged. There is no actual friend, they all had the same objectives which they achieved. But looking at the good cop also talk tough must tell you about the frustrations of the US. If Pakistan dont shape up now its gonna make life tough. You have already seen what happened in Afghanistan/Iraq and other places, dont want Pakistan to end up in the same way.
we don't need your money. its high time Pakistan learns to live within whatever it has.
and the US will never cease to be the BULLY it has always been.
