KARACHI – “Sorry, we can’t trust the police,” an employee of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) bluntly told a high-ranking police officer when asked to evacuate the power utility’s head office.
Most employees who braved the mob attack were reluctant to hand over control for fear of further damage or theft by police officers.
“Where were you when the mob attacked our head office,” he said, rebuking a high-ranking police officer for acting as a bystander during the attack.
Defence Station House Officer (SHO) Arshad Janjua was present outside the KESC Head Office in the evening, and was later joined by TPO Tariq Dharejo. KESC guards did not allow them near the damaged property, pointing them instead to an open area inside the premises.
A guard of a private security company, Frontline Security, told Pakistan Today that the KESC management had passed orders not to allow anyone near to the damaged property after some policemen tried to steal some goods from the building.
“We tried to stop them from this act, but they did not pay heed to our request,” he said. “Later, we complained to the KESC management, who approached high-ups of the police to avoid robberies inside the building. “We are here to keep an eye over the police,” he said.
