‘Artpreneurs For Change’ as means of expression

US Consulate Public Affairs Attaché Kevin Murakami appreciated the work of 22 art teachers, three local partners and the participating children with special needs at the “Artpreneurs For Change” certificate distribution ceremony at the Rangoonwala Community Centre on Saturday.
Artpreneurs For Change (AFC) is a collaborative project between Fulbright Alums, Naya Jeevan, NOWPDP (Network of Organisations Working for People with Disabilities) and art therapists aimed at providing a means of expression to children with disabilities. The work generated through this project will be used to insure children with disabilities through a managed care fund.
The AFC marked the successful completion of its pilot project, funded by the US Consulate Karachi with the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Murakami said: “It gives me great pleasure to be here today in recognition of the important work being done on behalf of children with disabilities here in Karachi. I applaud the work of the art teachers in the pilot programme, as well as the participating local partners. I encourage others in Karachi, and throughout Pakistan, to find inspiration in your pioneering work.”
The AFC worked with collaborating partners Darul Sukun Orphanage, ACELP Institute of Child Development and Ida Rieu School for the Blind and Deaf, where art therapists lead children with special needs through art classes for the last six months, engaging, enabling and empowering the children.
US Consulate Press Attaché Amanda Cauldwell lauded the efforts of all the teachers and schools involved in the project.
She said: “It is truly an honour to share the stage tonight with so many enthusiastic teachers and administrators, so committed to this incredible work creating beautiful art with children with special needs.”
The artwork created under the programme is exhibited and sold, with the proceeds funding the project’s further development. In addition to Saturday’s certificate distribution ceremony, an exhibit of artwork created by participating children opened for display at the Lincoln Corner, in the Rangoonwala Community Centre, and will remain on show until next Thursday.
